Filthy Fifty Update
At Coming Together for a Better Detroit, a large public meeting held in March 2011, Our Kids Come First asked Kim James, the former Director of Building, Safety & Engineering (BSE) for the City of Detroit, to demolish the Filthy Fifty (a list of fifty dangerous and abandoned building near schools in Southwest Detroit). Kim James committed to demolishing these buildings by March 2012.
Last week the Harms Elementary Our Kids Come First Chapter received an update from from BSE on the Filthy Fifty campaign:
- 15 of the Filthy Fifty have been demolished,
- 18 are in the final stages of the demolition process and should be torn down in the next month,
- 17 are at various stages in the demolition process and should be demolished by March 2012.
They are petitioning BSE to tear down two houses on the Filthy Fifty list that are still standing and are directly across the street from the school.
