Our Kids Come First Forms Coalition for Quality Schools
At a meeting Tuesday, Tubman affiliate, Our Kids Come First, challenged leaders from teachers unions and local non-profit agencies to form a coalition to fight for quality schools in Detroit. Also in attendance was Eric Zachary, from the Annenberg Institute for School Reform. He gave an overview of Annenberg’s similar work on school reform in New York City where parent groups came together with teachers unions and agencies to fight for quality schools.
Leadership from Southwest Detroit Congress of Communities, Southwest Solutions, ACCESS, Urban Neighborhood Initiatives, DFT, AFT, DPS Labor, Partnership for Youth, and Our Kids Come First committed to work together on a campaign for quality schools. As a next step, Our Kids Come First committed to conduct a series of workshops, between now and May 17, to increase understanding about the state of education in Detroit. They aim to reach 200 people through the workshops, which in turn will lead up to a Community Forum on Education May 17 hosted by the Southwest Detroit Congress of Communities.
