Tubman, Second Ebenezer, and the White House
A team of 15 staff from the White House Office of Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships were in Detroit Monday, September 26, 2011, and their first stop was a faith leaders reception co-hosted by Second Ebenezer and the Tubman Center.
Officers of Tubman affiliates were introduced to the faith leaders: Barbara Mays (VP, Our Kids Come First); Lawrence Williams, Nicole and Nicholas Lassiter (Executive Board, YOUTH VOICE); Pastor Bob Cornwall (Central Woodward Christian Church, Metro Coalition of Congregations), Clark Washington and Rev. William J. Colston (Detroit Action Commonwealth), Vicky Kovari (Michigan Organizing Collabortive). Bishop J. Drew Shread of Greater Emmanuel Church of God in Christ, Pastor Corey Chavis of New Starlight Missionary Baptist Church, Pastor Brumfield, Oak Grove AME Church, Min. Victor Muhamad of the Nation of Islam, and Bishop B. A. Gibert of Detroit Outreach Church and other faith leaders gathered to welcome Executive Director Joshua Dubois and his staff to Detroit.
Speakers at the reception included Bishop Edgar L. Vann of Second Ebenezer Church and Vanguard CDC, Bishop P.A. Brooks of New St. Paul Tabernacle Church of God in Christ, Ms. Alice Thompson of Black Family Development, Greg Roberts of the State Office Michigan Faith Based Office, and Pastor Jerome Warfield of Mount Vernon Baptist Church. Each of the speakers echoed the concerns and the needs of the residents of Detroit and the surrounding areas.
Mr. Joshua Dubois, Executive Director White House Office of Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships, introduced his team and acknowledged the concerns of the residents and spoke about new programs aimed at helping cities like Detroit.
On Tuesday, the White House team conducted a Town Hall meeting for community leaders and residents at Wayne County Community College.
